Scene is of the 1971 Test series in the West Indies and India go on to win the Test series. Sunil Gavaskar is the prolific run scorer. One man who successfully implemented the policy, "If we cannot score, we'll tire you out". And so he did, he tired out the West Indies fast bowlers and the other countries were quick to learn from his theories.

So four years later, in 1975, the first world cup came into being. As if to make a statement or raise the question to the Indians and Sunil Gavaskar especially who could score runs in his own way, "Now, how will you tire us out?"

The Indian team were a bunch of slow learners as far as one-day cricket was concerned. The television camera and video recordings had been there since quite a few years before the first world cup arrived. And this technology played a crucial role in showcasing the world cup in front of the people.

The round of 1975 went to the West Indies who repeated history in 1979. Come 1983 and India spoilt the hat-trick of the West Indies which was later completed by Australia in 1999, 2003 and 2007 editions. Australia had earlier won the 1987 edition as well.In their hat-trick of world cups in 1999, 2003 and 2007 they beat Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka in the three finals against them and all three of them failing.

Coming back to 1983, India had a lot of work to do in scoring quick runs. The initial practice games went terribly wrong for the Indians and even in the tournament they were not expected to win. But there were 2 gentlemen who stood out in the 1983 world cup. The first was Kapil Dev who in a way silenced the television technology that had been since quite sometime, thus:
"You missed my one innings, mate, when I scored heavily.".

And in the finals against the West Indies, Mohinder Amarnath sent the West Indies batsmen packing as the Englishmen would say it, but perhaps the Indians and especially the Hindus would like to put it in a different way, "He sent them to the Amarnath yatra". And 25 years later it still holds true, since the West Indies have yet to lift a world cup since the 1979 edition, or even reach the finals.

The trophy, Kapil Dev lifted at the Lords did not just belong to him or his team but to an entire country who felt proud at that very moment and still feel proud when they recall this lift. Perhaps the most memorable lift by an Indian in one-day cricket and even world cricket.
